description:
Side 2 of 2. Catharine Miller (formerly Jattros) was born on September 25, 1923 in Bridgeton, New Jersey. She graduated from a local high school in Wilmington, Delaware. She married her husband soon after graduation, and he was drafted into the Army and left for basic training just 8 days after their wedding. He became a POW after the B-17 he was the tail gunner on was shot down. Catharine enlisted in the Marine Corps upon finding out her husband was a POW in February 1944 and went to basic training at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina in April. After finishing training, she was assigned to the Naval Air Station in Atlanta, Georgia and worked in a variety of roles, including in the control tower and as a link trainer, before being assigned to mess duty for two months. From there, she was sent to Quantico, Virginia with the Aviation Women Reserve Squadron 21. There, she worked on radar installation and technology in a secured location. Her husband, who had escaped 6 times while a POW, returned to the United States in July 1945, and Catharine was released from active duty in October 1945, meeting him at the psychiatric hospital he was at in Macon, Georgia. After her husband was released from the hospital, she used the GI Bill to attend college. After getting her degree, she taught at the Communications and Electronics Battalion at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California until her retirement in July 1981. When she left the service Miller had reached the rank of private 1st class, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
