Navy WAVES
description:
Ruth H. Eagerman was born on April 14, 1921 in Malden, Massachusetts. Before she enlisted in the Navy, she had been kicked by a horse which broke a bone. She sent in her application in January 1943, but was ordered to get an EEG before her acceptance in March of that year. She was then in inactive service until being sent to Hunter College for basic training in June, where she became her platoon’s leader. She had to go to the infirmary for ten days while there because of a swollen boil on her leg. After training, she worked as a director for enlisted women. She was then transferred to a Naval Air Station in Atlanta, Georgia. While there, she and many other women became ill after an air conditioner in a Quonset hut broke down, and her headaches lasted longer than others. She then began working as a recruiter and was sent to a Naval hospital in Charleston, South Carolina. The Medical Board decided she was unfit for service, but she refused to sign paperwork that said the Navy wasn’t responsible for her health problems. After another month, her father is ill and she gets a stye in her eye, so she agrees to leave the Navy. Eagerman was officially discharged in August 1943, having reached the rank of seaman 2nd class. Videography was done by Andrea Ahrens. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
