description:
Galen Grant was born on August 31, 1952 in Saratoga Springs, New York. After high school, she got a bachelors degree in psychology with a minor in black studies. She enlisted in the Army in 1975, so she spent two years in the Women’s Army Corps before it was disbanded in 1977. This change resulted in Grant becoming a drill sergeant, a position from which she became the first female drill sergeant of the year while stationed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina in 1983. Throughout her service, she was also stationed at Fort Hood, Fort Gordon, Tripler Army Medical Center, and Fort Sam. She got a doctorate in psychology when she was commissioned as an officer in 1993. She was discharged in 1999. She was a psychologist at Fort Eustis after her discharge, from 2001 to 2003. This meant that she, who is a lesbian, had to evaluate men and women while under the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy and was herself under threat of discharge if she disclosed her sexuality at any point in her service. As of the interview, she was working as the President of American Voters for Equal Rights National Capitol chapter. The interview took place seven years before the policy was repealed, and eleven years before the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage nationally. When she left he service Grant had reached the rank of captain, and for her service she was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal with four oak leaf clusters, and Overseas Ribbon. No transcript if this interview is currently available.
