description:
Side 2 of 2. This is the edited interview audio. Anna Marie Hulick (formerly Whalen) was born on August 16, 1920 in Spalding, Nebraska. She enlisted in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps in 1943, going to boot camp that January. While there, they had makeshift uniforms because of a delay in their arrival. She was assigned to Fort Leonard Wood with the Signal Corps after training. She was a colonel’s secretary, and from there was picked to be the general’s secretary, which set her up for overseas duty. She went to overseas training and was ordered to the Pacific afterwards. She served with General MacArthur in the Philippines, including during battles in Leyte and Luzon, and in Manila where she had to be sprayed with insecticide. She then went to Brisbane, Australia with the second WAC detachment sent to that area. She recalls publicity tours happening around them, and reads several excerpts from the diary she kept during her service. Her mother requested she return home early to help take care of her sick father, so she was discharged in September 1945. After her discharge, she lived in New York City and worked on Wall Street for years, then returned home to Nebraska. When she left the service Hulick had reached the rank of technician 3rd class, and for her service she was awarded and Army Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 battle stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, American Campaign Medal, Women’s Army Corps Service Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
