description:
Ruth Coster was born on December 11, 1918 in Citrus Heights, California. She joined the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) in 1944, and she found boot camp hilarious and that it was very new and different. She enlisted with the goal of going overseas, so she was excited to get on a ship after basic and go “somewhere.” She ended up going to New Guinea, where she and the other WACs stayed in tents with six other women. She was apart of the Far East Air Service Command. Not everyone was happy to see women there in the service, and she and the other WACs battled for respect and acceptance. Coster was discharged after World War II had ended at the start of 1946, with the rank of sergeant. For her service, she was awarded an Army Good Conduct Medal, Women’s Army Corps Service Medal, American Campaign Medan, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with a bronze star, World War II Victory Medal, and Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
