description:
Jean A. Ebbert (formerly Ineson) was born on November 15, 1918 in Brooklyn, New York. She grew up in Babylon, New York, which was a fisherman’s town on Long Island. She graduated from high school when she was 16, and got her BA and MA by 1949 from what was then called the New York State College for Teachers at Albany, now State University of New York (SUNY): Albany. She then taught 7th and 8th grade English in Bay Shore, Long Island but didn’t like it much. In 1952 she was commissioned as an ensign into the Navy directly from civilian life. She went to Newport, Rhode Island and was placed in a pre-commissioned unit with 70 women, who she went through indoctrination with for 16 weeks. From there, she was stationed at Corry Field at the Naval Air Basic Training Command in Pensacola, Florida. She was assigned to the Information and Education Office, which was meant to provide educational support for officers and enlisted personnel. The biggest element was the administration of semi-annual promotion exams. She met her future husband while he was a flight student there and they were married in 1954. Ebbert resigned her commission and was released two months later. Her husband remained in the Navy, so they and their three children lived in several different states in the US and overseas. When they were living in Virginia, she began writing and had published four books by the time of the interview, including The First, The Few, The Forgotten and Crossed Currents. She was also a featured columnist for the Navy Times from 1978 until 1992. When she left the service, Ebbert had reached the rank of lieutenant junior grade, and for her service she was awarded a National Defense Service Medal. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
