Jones, Mary Rogers (Davis) (1924 October 8 - )
subject:
Navy WAVES
description:
Mary R. Jones (formerly Davis) was born on October 8, 1924 in Natchez, Mississippi and grew up on a plantation ten miles south of Natchez with her parents and one sister. After graduating from the high school in Natchez, she went to the University of Mississippi for one year before joining the Navy WAVES. She enlisted because her sister was a WAVES recruiter who came to colleges around Mississippi and convinced her when they met up. She enlisted in October 1944, spent three months on basic training at Hunter College, then three more months in Stillwater, Oklahoma for Yeoman’s school. The worst thing that happened while in training was when all four thousand at Hunter College came down with food poisoning at once. After finishing her training, they were able to request their station and she got hers: New Orleans, Louisiana. She was stationed at the Canal Bank Building with the Naval Transportation Office, where she worked with WAVES, SPARS, and women Marines. She remained at this station until her discharge in May 1946. After leaving the service, she returned to college and met her husband who had returned from a German POW camp, and they had two daughters. When she left the service Jones had reached the rank of yeoman 2nd class, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victor Medal. A transcript of this interview is available.
