In 1944, she graduated from nursing school in the Cadet Nurse Corps and joined the Army Nurse Corps. She went to Fort Dix in New Jersey for boot camp in February 1945, then was assigned to Rhoads General Hospital in New York. From there, she was very quickly sent over to Seattle, Washington to ship out with the 317th General Hospital to Hawaii. Women with the 317th were put on detached service, so she went from Hawaii to Okinawa, Japan to build a hospital. Later in 1945, she was sent to Yokohama, Japan. She was on a ship in the harbor of Yokohama on V-J Day, and after that the 317th was broken up so she was sent to the 151st Station Hospital until February of 1946. While stationed there her brother, an Air Transport Command Pilot, was able to visit her. She was sent by troop train to Hokkaido, Japan to bring back wounded soldiers. She then returned to the states and had a short leave before going to Jones Geneal Hospital in Michigan. She remained there for a few months before being discharged from Fort Dix, New Jersey in August of 1946. After leaving the service, she used the GI Bill to get a bachelors degree from Syracuse University, and masters in nursing from Columbia University, and a PhD. She founded the College of Nursing at the University of Kentucky, where she was the Dean for 12 years before stepping in as Dean at James Madison University’s College of Nursing. She was also a member of the Defense Department Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS). When she left the service Dake had reached the rank of 1st lieutenant, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
