description:
Mary V. Geffken (formerly Cowen) was born on May 9, 1921 in Jersey City, New Jersey. She grew up there with her aunt and uncle, and attended a Catholic grammar and high school. She decided to enlist in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps on her 22nd birthday in 1942, and went to six weeks of basic training at Fort Devens, Massachusetts in 1943. After basic, she was sent to Fort Myer, Virginia for four weeks of technician school. From there, she served in the Pentagon on a quite secret assignment. At one point during her service, she was a model for a WAAC recruiting poster. She left the service in February 1945 after her marriage, having reached the rank of sergeant, and for her service Geffken was awarded an Amry Good Conduct Medal, Women’s Army Corps Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
