description:
Side 1 of 2. This is the edited interview audio. Mabel E. Hardin (formerly Drake) was born on January 21, 1922 in Webster Groves, Missouri. While living in Greenville, Illinois, she and a friend talked about enlisting together, and although her friend backed out Hardin enlisted in the Coast Guard SPARs in 1943 since she was the only one in her family who wasn’t too old or too young to serve. She went to training and Yeoman’s School in Palm Beach, Florida. Although she would’ve liked being assigned to Hawaii after training, she instead went to Washington, DC and maintained Admiral Weische’s flex-line files for himself and his office more broadly. She remained in this position until her discharge in 1946 from St. Louis, Missouri. She spent the first month afterwards at home helping her mother and loafing about, then returned to the telephone company she had been working at before enlisting. When she left the service, Hardin had reached the rank of specialist X, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. A transcript of this interview is available.
