description:
Frances J. Dreape (formerly Pinn) was born on May 25, 1921 in New York City, New York. She enlisted in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps in September of 1943, when she was 21 years old. Basic training was at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, and after that she was stationed at Kennedy General Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, and Hamilton Air Base in California. After basic she was offered a spot for officer training, but she turned it down. When stationed at Kennedy General Hospital, they worked with returning wounded soldiers. She mostly did office work, checked wards, and handled supplies. She really enjoyed the NCO Club, and found it a great place to relax and socialize. She was then stationed at Mitchell Field at Hamilton Air Base, which is where she met her future husband. They were both discharged in 1946 and married in November of 1947. After leaving the Army, they both became officers in the Foreign Service. Their children were both born while they were in the Foreign Service, one in 1950 and the other in 1954. Their work took them around the world, including Austria, India, Canada, Italy, and Nicaragua. She was discharged from the Foreign Service in 1973. When she left the Army, Dreape had reached the rank of technical sergeant, and for her service she was awarded a Women’s Army Corps Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
