description:
Anna Henderson (formerly Mansfield) was born on October 22, 1916 in Brooklyn, New York. Although she wanted to join the Coast Guard, she instead enlisted in the Navy WAVES in March 1944. She went to basic training at Hunter College in New York, and her first assignment afterwards was at St. Albans Naval Hospital in New York as a pharmacist’s mate, mostly in the women’s sick bay. She was then stationed in Cleveland, Ohio briefly before being transferred to the Great Lakes Naval Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. This was her last station before getting sick and being discharged in March 1945. She views her biggest contribution to the war effort as listening to the men she treated tell her about their experiences, and felt he travelled the world through their stories. Since she left the service, she attended medical school and has remained involved in veterans organizations, especially the Gold Coast Veterans. When she was discharge Henderson had reached the rank of pharmacist’s mate 3rd class, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. No transcript of thins interview is currently available.
