description:
Side 2 of 2. This is the original, unedited interview audio. Sarah D. Reinherz (formerly Sugarberg) was born on March 4, 1917 in Boston, Massachusetts. She enlisted in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps in September 1942 and went through basic training at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. She was assigned to the Army Air Forces, so her next stations were in Denver, Colorado and Oklahoma. She was given the choice between serving overseas or going to Officer Candidate’s School, and she elected to go overseas in the Pacific. They shipped out of San Francisco, and she was volunteered to be dunked in a massive vat as they crossed the international date line and equator to appease Neptune as they headed towards New Guinea. Her last assignment was in the Philippines, receiving her discharge upon returning to the United States in 1945. When she left the service, Reinherz had reached the rank of private 1st class, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Overseas Service Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
