Navy WAVES
description:
Pearl Kitmacher (Harris) was born in Schenectady, New York on October 29 1922. Growing up, she initially wanted to be a teacher, but in high school she was turned off from the idea by her teacher. Instead of becoming a teacher, Pearl enlisted in the Navy WAVES in December 1944 after her brother-in-law told her that the women he served with in the Navy seemed nice. She had boot camp in Cedar Falls before going to yeoman training, then she ended up working in Arlington, Virginia and Washington, DC until she was discharged in July 1946. She has been awarded the American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. She passed away in June 2016. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
