Tape 1 of 2, side 1 of 2. Louise “Sgt. Sunshine” Pledger (formerly Belfi) was born in Collingwood, Ohio on November 11, 1915. Before the United States joined World War II, because she had seen the early wartime state of Italy and only had a sister, she felt she had to do something. In January 1942 she joined the Cleveland, Ohio chapter of the Civil Air Patrol, the first chapter to be founded after the attack on Pearl Harbor. While in the Civil Air Patrol, she rode with famous Russian-American aviator Igor Sikorsky. She left the Civil Air Patrol in November 1943 when she enlisted in the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve. After she first enlisted, she went to basic training at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. She was then stationed at the Marine Corps Base in San Diego, California as part of the 2nd Casual Company Pay Office. She remained in the service until January 1945. When she received her discharge Pledger had reached the rank of staff sergeant, and for her service she was awarded Observer’s Wings and a Women Flyer’s of American Pin from the Civil Air Patrol and a Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal from her military service.
