description:
Jara Lang (Fatout) was born on May 9, 1970 in Tulsa, Oklahoma and grew up in Odessa, Texas. Her family doesn't have a history of military service that she knows of, but while she was on the swim team in high school they had a training she didn't want to attend, so she went to a meeting about the Air Force Academy at the same instead. Once she got to the Air Force Academy in 1988, her biggest challenge was balancing all that she had to do to make sure she could be her best, most capable self. She became a chemical sciences officer, a field that no longer exists, after trying to become a physical therapist and being rerouted. She was sent to work in a chemistry lab to work on various rocket fuels in California, but she requested to find another position as she was a biology major, which does not lend itself to understanding and doing chemistry. She ended up working with US Fish and Wildlife in a position that helped protect wildlife in and around the base. This involved testing the environment around the base before, during, and after things like fuel tests to protect the area from serious impacts of emissions, sounds, and other possible harms as well as ensuring tests were being done within the boundaries of federal, state, and local regulations. Jara returned to the Air Force Academy for three years to serve as an assistant swimming coach, which was one of her favorite assignments, and then served at the Pentagon for a few years. She left the service in 2013 having achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
