Navy WAVES
description:
Barbara A. Goodenough (formerly Hillemeyer) was born on October 19, 1923 in Webster Groves, Missouri. She grew up there as the eighth of nine children, and her father worked for Union Electric. She signed up for the Navy WAVES as soon as she could after turning 20 in 1943, which she did with the enthusiastic support of her parents. She went to basic training at Hunter College in New York, which lasted for six or eight weeks. From there, she was sent to storekeeper’s school at the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia for another three of four months. After finishing technical training, she was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Ottumwa, Iowa. While there, she was apart of the WAVES drill team. She remained at this station until World War II ended, and she decided to leave the service rather than try to stay in so she could go home, especially since her parents were getting older. She’s glad she made this choice, because soon after, her father ended up at the St. Joseph’s Hill Infirmary after getting Parkinson’s. After leaving the service in 1946, she worked in the office for City Service Oil Company. When she left the service, Goodenough had reached the rank of 1st class petty officer, and for her service she was awarded a Captain’s Certificate of Merit, American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
