description:
Side 1 of 2. Dorothy Lula Perkinson (formerly Brumby) was born on March 21, 1919 in Franklin, Louisiana. After graduating from the local high school she attended Tulane University and got a bachelor’s degree in 1938, spent a year off at home, then attended Columbia University and got a master’s degree in 1942. She briefly taught at a Mississippi junior college before enlisting in the Navy WAVES in January 1943. She enlisted because she didn’t have an brothers, and felt that teaching could wait until after she served. She was taken into the 3rd class of WAVES officers and went through training at Smith College. Because she spoke three languages, she was set on track to work in censorship. After training she was stationed in New Orleans, Louisiana then New York censoring cable, radio, and telephone communications from Europe, South America, and Central America. Although she wasn’t happy about it, she left the service after the war ended in Europe because she did not have the knowledge and experience to continue her work in the Pacific Theater. She also got married during the war, giving their families only a week’s notice because they had very limited leave at the same time. When Perkinson left the service in January 1945 she had reached the rank of lieutenant junior grade, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
