subject:
Army Medical Specialist Corps
description:
Marie H. Calnan (formerly Baylies) was born on April 11, 1920. Her father was an Army officer, so she grew up all around the United States. After high school, Calnan enrolled at Kansas State University and graduated in 1942. From there, she was then accepted in the first physical therapy class at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado, and after finishing the program she was commissioned into the Women’s Medical Specialist Corps in 1943. In 1944, she was assigned to the 91st General Hospital in England, initially caring for Army Air Forces casualties, and later adding Army divisions from continental Europe to their care during the invasion of Normandy. After the war ended, the 91st was sent to Liege, Belgium. Upon returning to the United States in 1945, she was stationed in New York, Illinois, and Texas. While she was stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, she was chosen to help establish and run the newly created physical therapy clinic at Fort Myer, Virginia. While stationed here, she met her future husband, getting married in 1948. She left the service that same year, having reached the rank of captain. For her service, Calnan had been awarded the American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. Marie Calnan passed away in June 2004. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
