description:
Part 2 of 2. Nancy Rundell (formerly Torlinski) was born on October 5, 1922 in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. Her father had gone to the Naval Academy but left after 5 years to become a lawyer (eventually becoming a captain in the Naval Reserve). She had one sister who was five years younger than her. She attended Woodrow Wilson High School, graduating in 1940 and attending Cornell University as an English major, a program she was allowed to graduate early from in February 1944. She enlisted in the Navy WAVES soon after, in June 1944. She was initially sent to Smith College in North Hampton, Massachusetts for four months of training before working as a communications officer. She spent 1 year in Boston, Massachusetts and 1 year in Washington, DC, where she oversaw the postal service, teletype operators, and censorship of the brig mail. In Boston, the receiving station was sending 10,000 men a month to Europe. After the war and her 1946 discharge, she used the GI Bill to attend the Washington School for secretaries. She stayed connected to the military through her husband Francis E. “Bud” Rundell, a 2nd generation West Point graduate, Air Force officer, B-17 pilot, and World War II POW. She served as Air Force Officers' Wives' Club president, magazine editor, and authored Front Row Balcony after a 1978 tour in Iran. When she left the service Rundell had reached the rank of lieutenant junior grade, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. She passed away in August 2016. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
