description:
This is the original, unedited interview audio. Bertha E. Ebenstein (formerly Draisen) was born on December 21, 1917 in Burlington, Vermont, and she grew up with her parents and five siblings in Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated from Jeremiah E. Burke High School in 1936. She didn’t know what she wanted to do right away but came around to wanting to become a nurse. In 1943 she enlisted in the Navy WAVES, and since she wanted to work in a hospital she pursued becoming a pharmacist’s mate. After basic training at Hunter College, she became just that after training at Brooklyn Naval Hospital. She was then stationed at the US Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. While there, the WAVES were told they could serve overseas, so she and a friend volunteered to do so and were sent to Naval Hospital 128 in Oahu, Hawaii in early 1945. She loved her time in Hawaii, which was her last assignment before being discharged in December 1945. Ebenstein left the service with the rank of pharmacist’s mate 2nd class, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. A transcript of this interview is available.
