description:
Elizabeth Dubin was born September 18, 1912 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was the oldest of three, which meant she was in charge a lot of the time. Her mother passed away when she was nine, so she lived with her mother’s parents. She graduated from Germantown high school in Philadelphia, then worked as a secretary at a hospital in the city for a decade before enlisting. Her brother joined the Army with her, but he was discharged early and she ended up being the only one in her family who served during World War II. She went to training in Florida, although she doesn’t remember where, before being sent to Scott Field in Illinois for three years. While there, she mostly worked checking records and preparing orders for men going overseas. Looking back, Dubin wishes she had stayed in the Army. Two years after leaving the service in 1945, she got married and had one child. She left the service with the rank of Staff Sergeant, and for her time she was awarded the Women’s Army Corps Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
