Her family moved to New York, and she worked at McGraw-Hill Publishing Company for three years before going to nurse’s training at Bellevue Hospital, New York and graduating in July 1944. She almost immediately joined the Army Nurse Corps and went t basic training in Atlantic City, New Jersey. After completing training, she was stationed to the Station Hospital at Fort Niagara, New York. She was then sent to California so she could ship off to the China-Burma-India theater. She shipped out on the USS Admiral Benson and landed in Bombay, India after 30 days. She went by train to the 96th Field Hospital that was temporarily attached to the 142nd General Hospital in Calcutta, India. Her next station was at the 234th General Hospital in Chabua, India on detached service. After 18 Army nurses died in a plane crash, her temporary unit was transferred to the 69th General Hospital in Ledo, India to take their places. This hospital was declared surplus, and her unit was sent to a staging area outside of Calcutta. Her final station was in Okinawa, Japan before returning to her home in Connecticut, receiving a discharge in March 1946. When she left the service Newman had reached the rank of 1st lieutenant, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
