description:
Part 2 of 2. Rachel Lehmann (formerly Rosen) was born in New York City, New York on June 1, 1903. She grew up in Colchester, Connecticut without electricity or running water, and her oldest brother enlisted in the military while underage during World War I. She went to public schools in Colchester, and left school after completing her first year of high school so she could work instead. She moved to Miami Beach and married, and they opened a store together. She enlisted in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps in 1943, after the Army waived the age requirement to let her join. She went to training at Fort Des Moines, Iowa; Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, and Daytona Beach, Florida. She was assigned to a group that was sent Fort Dix, New Jersey and worked in insurance and allotment. From there, she was assigned to the Camp Upton Reception Center in the mess section. There, she was Chief Clerk of the mess office which meant she was in chare of 30 messes and up to 250 personnel. She was discharged in December 1946 with the rank of technician 4th grade, and for her service she was awarded a Women’s Army Corps Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
