description:
Side 2 of 2. This is the original, unedited interview audio. DOB Jan 4, 1922, VHP, bio, consent, no transcript - Stauffer served as a WAVE ariel gunnery instructor during WWII. She said in an oral history, "It was a grand experience in a lot of ways -- just the fact that we thought we were doing something to help the war. We used simulated machines and the boys, young men, would come in groups of about twenty. A lot of them - all of them - were headed off to the Pacific, and a lot of them had never had a gun in their hands. They did not understand that you don't fire in the air, and seeing another plane in the air you don't shoot directly at the plane. They had no conception of trajectory; they had no conception of speed; so we felt what we were doing was pretty important. Sort of try to give them some sense of that sort of thing. My rank was Specialist Gunner Second Class. Now, that's not Gunner's Mate. Gunner's rank, a right arm rank. They wore their chevron on their right arm we were only trainers so we had SPG two chevron and it was on the left arm, and people in the service knew that sort of stuff.""If women want equal responsibility, they have to accept equal responsibility." - American Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal - MISSED IN THE SCANS
