description:
Mabel Otten was born on May 14, 1924 in Centerville Township, Illinois to George and Emma Otten. Mabel worked in a factory prior to her enlistment. Mabel enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 16, 1944 after she turned 20 years old. She served mostly at Moanalua Ridge, Hawaii during World War II and was discharged following the demobilization of the Women's Reserve in 1946. Mabel re-enlisted in the reserve in 1947 and returned to active duty in 1948 when she was sent to the Marine Corps Headquarters to work as a stenographer. She was promoted to Staff Sergeant while at HQMC, then went to Cherry Point where she was promoted to Master Sergeant in 1951. She then attended officer school and was stationed around the US for many years. On August 1, 1969, Mabel became 4th Sergeant Major of Women's Marines. In 1972, Mable transferred to Fleet Reserves and retired after 30 years of service in 1975. Mabel remarked that she was adamant and strict with orders and was always fair. She stressed the coveted title of a Marine...once you are a Marine, you are always a Marine. Mabel died on April 11, 2013 at the age of 88. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
