description:
Part 2 of 2. I was the Air Expeditionary Group Commander at Diego Garcia Feb-May 03 in charge of tankers and airlift. This was the prep for and execution of aerial combat operations in both Afghanistan and Iraq. It was my privilege to lead the aircrews and maintainers (primarily from Fairchild AFB) who were enthusiastic and totally committed to the mission. There was an exceptional feeling about topping off the fuel tanks of a B-52 or B-2, fully loaded, headed for downtown Baghdad.Other glimpses: Landing in Antarctica with supplies for the South Pole; serving on Gen Fogleman's personal staff group; briefing Sec Rumsfeld on the part of the Defense Planning Guidance I had authored; living aboard the USS Blue Ridge for a week as part of Exercise Terminal Fury; grilling CINCSAC (Jack Chain) on why Mildenhall had not earned an AF Outstanding Unit Award for participating in Eldorado Canyon (instead of being fired I was promoted early to Major). | Defense Superior Service Medal; Legion of Merit w/2 OLCs; Meritorious Service Medal w/3 OLCs; Aerial Achievement Medal; Air Force Aerial Achievement Medal
