description:
Robin F. Grantham as born on July 13, 1959 in Montgomery, Alabama. She grew up with her parents, who had both been in the Air Force, and three siblings in Pensacola, Florida. She graduated from Tate High School and attended a small college, graduating with a degree in journalism. She worked for a few years in print and radio news before drifting into work as a deputy sheriff. Although she liked some parts of the job, it was a dead end career-wise and got restless after three years. Her mother suggested joining the military, so she went to Navy and Air Force recruiters and joined the Air Force in 1984 when a window opened for people without technical degrees. She went to Officer Training School at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas before being stationed at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base in South Carolina. She spent two years there as the adjutant to an A-10 flying squadron, then became the section commander of a maintenance squadron. Her next assignment was Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington. While stationed there, she transitioned into public affairs, and was sent on temporary duty to Panama as a result. She then went to Izmir, Turkey, which she enjoyed so much she extended her stay by another six months. From there, she joined the staff of Air Education and Training Command in San Antonio, Texas, left active duty, and became a reservist in 1996. When active as a reservist, she moved to England and was assigned to Germany, then was selected to attend Air Command and Staff College. She remained in the Air Force Reserve until 2010. Grantham retired having reached the rank of colonel, and for her service she was awarded a Defense Meritorious Service Medal with an oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Joint Service Achievement Medal with an oak leaf cluster, and Legion of Merit.
