description:
Martha G. Herbert (formerly Walker) was born on August 18, 1921 in Dallas, Texas. She went to college for one year, then worked as an IBM operator in Dallas. She enlisted in the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve in November 1944 and was sent to basic training at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. She was almost sent home from training because her allergies got so bad, but she was able to stay on through basic training. After basic, she was assigned to Parris Island, South Carolina as a clerk typist. In 1945, she was transferred to San Francisco, California, where she lived in civilian housing since they didn’t have any barracks. She met her husband while stationed here, and they married soon in January 1946. Her duty changed while stationed in San Francisco, being assigned with eight other women as a key punch operator, mostly handling machine records for supply equipment. She was in San Francisco on V-J Day, and the streets went crazy when the news spread. She was discharged in March 1946. Upon her discharge, Herbert had reached the rank of corporal, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
