Angela Salinas was born in Alice, Texas on December 6, 1953. She enlisted in the Marine Corps in May 1974 and went to recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina. After this training, she served as a legal services clerk at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California; Marine Air Reserve Training Detachment, Alameda, California; and the inspector-instructor staff, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, San Antonio, Texas. In 1977 she went to Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia where she was commissioned as a second lieutenant. After graduating from OCS, she was assigned to the 2D Marine Aircraft Wing at Cherry Point, North Carolina as a legal services officer. In 1980, she was transferred to Woman Recruit Training Command at Parris Island, where she served in several different positions. She then attended Amphibious Warfare School in 1984, after which she was assigned as the adjutant for 3D Maintenance Battalion, 3D Force Service Group, Okinawa, Japan. After finishing her overseas service, she returned to the States and, in 1988, became the executive officer at the Recruiting Station in Charleston, West Virginia. In June 1989, she assumed command of RS Charleston, becoming the first woman in the Marine Corps to command a recruiting station. She then attended Naval War College and, in June 1992, became the first woman assigned as a combat service support ground monitor. In July 1993, she was assigned as Deputy of Special Assistant for the General/Flag Officer Matters, Office of Director, Joint Staff at the Pentagon until, in 1996, she assumed command of the 4th Recruiting Training Battalion, Parris Island. In 1988, she attended the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and, upon graduating, was assigned to Okinawa again, this time as an Assistant Chief of Staff. Here, she was responsible for all the Marine Expeditionary Force's operational plans. As of this interview, she had reached the rank of Colonel and had been awarded he Defense Superior Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal with a gold star, Army Commendation Medal, and Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars. In August 2006, she also became the first Hispanic woman to hold the rank of brigadier general. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
