description:
Side 2 of 2. Mary Thomas Sargent (formerly Schiek) was born on March 29, 1918 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She joined the American Red Cross overseas service in the fall of 1944. Her main assignment was at a B-29 Air Base in the Bengal Desert of India, seeing off bombers going to make bombing runs in Shanghai, Southeast Asia, and Japan. She remained at this station until May 1945, when she was injured in a truck accident. They were rounding a sharp corner on an old road and their truck was moving too quickly. She doesn’t remember exactly what happened, but next she remembers she was on the ground, could hear sliding gravel, and was lying so close to a wheel that she could reach out and touch it. She spent the next two years in an Army hospital recovering from this crash. Because she was in the Red Cross, she had no formal rank and did not receive any military service awards or medals. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
