Navy WAVES
description:
Ruth L. Needle (formerly Michaelson) was born on September 16, 1922 in New York City, New York. In October 1942, she was part of the very first class of enlisted Navy WAVES, and was the youngest person to enlist at the time in doing so. Since she was in the first enlisted class, there was not yet a single training center for the WAVES. She went to Bloomington, Indiana for her training instead. After training, she was stationed in Washington, DC, where one of her assignments was in recruiting. Her most memorable recruitment method was a stint doing a dance where she would start in a large flannel granny gown and strip down to her full WAVES uniform. She was discharged in February 1946, and remained in the Reserves until 1949. When she left active duty Needle had reached the rank of storekeeper 1st class, and for her service she was awarded a Navy Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
