description:
Side 2 of 2. Patsy L. Palmquist (formerly Bruner) was born on May 29, 1924 in McAllen, Texas. The day she turned 20, she enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps, which she wanted to do from the moment the United States joined World War II. She passed all the necessary exams on June 2, and shipped out to Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia for basic training. After completing training, which she thoroughly enjoyed, she was sent to Camp Fannin in Tyler, Texas with three other WACs. Before they were sent to other stations, there were 11 women stationed at Camp Fannin. She was assigned to the chaplain for awhile, then into the mess as a secretary. Her next station was headquarter, 8th Service Command in Dallas, Texas, where she was meant to ensure everyone who came in or out of the building was identified and known. She was then moved to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, and remained at this station until her discharge, processing the paperwork for other women who were discharged. She was there when she got a letter from her husband, who had been serving with the 11th Airborne in the Pacific theater, telling her he was coming home. She filed her own discharge papers and left the service in December 1945. She is a member of the American Legion, and was one of the first women in the organization. She was also the first woman elected state commander, and her husband was incredibly active with the organization as well. When she left the service Palmquist had reached the rank of technician 4th grade, and for her service she was awarded a Women’s Army Corps Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
