description:
Mary Jane Black (formerly Kerner) was born on December 5, 1921 to a family of 10 in Ottawa, Ohio. After graduating high school in 1940, she worked in Lima, Ohio at the Contracts Department. She then enlisted in the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve and went to basic training in the second class of Marine recruits sent to Hunter College in May 1943. It took a while to receive their uniforms, so the early stages of basic training were completed in civilian clothes. She then went to Camp Lejeune for Quartermasters School. After completing that in three months, Black was stationed at Camp Elliott in San Diego, California where she worked in a huge warehouse and met her first husband. After two years there, she was sent to the Supply Depot in San Francisco, California. This is the station she was discharged from in October 1945 after World War II came to a close that August. After leaving the service, she worked for the Navy as a civilian, and for 21 years back in the Contracts Department. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
