American Red Cross
description:
This is the edited interview audio. Anna Katherine Cleaver served overseas in England with the Red Cross from 1943 to 1945. She was in London when they were still in blackout, and remembers hearing the sirens and the bombers going overhead. From there, she was sent to Liverpool attached to the 74th General Hospital in a town called Wraxall. For most of the war, this was the largest U.S. Army hospital in Europe. She found the experience very broadening, getting to know all sorts of people she never would have met otherwise. Early on, the hospital mostly received patients directly from Omaha Beach, but as the war continued the 74th became a Zone of Interior Hospital. This meant that they received patients from several other facilities after their immediate treatment and got them ready for their return to the United States. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
