subject:
Navy WAVES
description:
This is the edited interview audio. Eleanor Dion was born on July 1, 1919 in Summerville, South Carolina. After graduating from high school, she attended the College of Charleston and graduated with a degree in English in 1941. She had a brother and a sister, and her brother had joined the Nav after World War II broke out. She saw him do so, and decided that she’d like to join too, enlisting in the third class of Navy WAVES in December of 1942. She went to basic training at Smith College in Massachusetts. While there she was mostly in communications classes, learning how to run coding machines, typing, and Naval history to prepare for sending messages that often contained confidential information. From Smith College, she was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, where she stayed for the rest of her service. She was discharged in 1945, partially because they would not let her transfer. She was married to a Naval officer who she had met through a friend in college. When she left the service, Dion had reached the rank of lieutenant junior grade, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. A transcript of this interview is available.
