description:
This is the edited interview audio. Marceline Paulin (formerly Hilgart) was born in Grafton, Wisconsin on November 13, 1923. She enlisted in the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve in December 1943, soon after turning 20 years old. She was shipped to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for basic training in February 1944, and was assigned to Washington, DC after completing basic. There, she served as muster-role clerk at Henderson Hall in Arlington, Virginia for just under a year. Her next assignment was in the post office department in Oahu, Hawaii, where she remained until her discharge at the Marine Corps Air Station in El Toro, California at the end of December 1945. She worked for a year in Chicago, Illinois before returning to Grafton, where she took her old job back and used the GI Bill to learn how to fly. She married a former Navy man in 1950, they had six children together, and they ran a small, independent grocery store for 25 years until their 1981 retirement. When she left the service Paulin had reached the rank of corporal, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
