description:
A. Luella Simon (formerly Grote) was born on February 28, 1921 in Green Springs, Ohio. She was among the first 3,000 women to enlist in the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve when it first began in 1943, being sworn in on June 1. She went to four weeks of basic training at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and was then selected to be in the first class of Women Marines to go to advanced training at the Naval Training School in Chicago, Illinois for aircraft instrument repair school. There, they primarily learned to prepare instrument panels for Corsair airplanes. After completing a month of training there, she was assigned to the Marine Corps Air Station in Quantico, Virginia working in the instrument shop with eight other Women Marines and four men who had served overseas in Guadalcanal. She remained stationed there for the entirety of her service. On her days off, she volunteered at Walter Reed Army Hospital and Bethesda Naval Hospital, assisting wounded servicemen by writing dictated letters to their families for them. Simon received her discharge in November 1945 having reached the rank of corporal, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
