Part 1 of 2. Vivian Jean Harned (formerly Reese) was born on December 16, 1919 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. She grew up there, graduating from Johnstown High School before attending the University of Pittsburgh. When the United States joined World War II and women were allowed to enlist, Harned enlisted in the Coast Guard SPARs in June 1943. She went to basic training and Storekeepers School in Palm Beach, Florida, and was then stationed in New York in the Disbursing Office of the 3rd Coast Guard district. While working there, she was given the opportunity to go to Officer Candidate School which she started in 1945 at the Manhattan Beach Training Center in New York. She was commissioned in October of 1945 and stationed in the Disbursing Office at the Coast Guard HQ in Washington, DC, where she remained until she was released from active duty in June 1946. She elected to stay in the Coast Guard Reserves, which she served in from July 1946 until December 1979. In her time in the Reserves, she served in the 5th, 12th, and 8th Coast Guard districts. She also worked in various different federal jobs in that time, including working at the New Mexico Atomic Testing Center and being the first woman selected for the Data Processing program at the IRS in 1978. When she left the Coast Guard, Harned had reached the rank of captain and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Armed Forces Reserve Medal with a Bronze Hourglass and Numeral 2.
