description:
Kimberly Taylor was born on June 16, 1972 in Pontiac, Michigan. She enlisted in the Army in 1990 to get access to college benefits. She went to basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and she became a petroleum supply specialist. Kimberly served in Operation Desert Storm, where she sustained an injury. She was working at night on an FTX and fell into a huge trench, which resulted in her rucksack breaking her back and her M-16 breaking her arm. She didn't realize she'd sustained these injuries until she reported in to get her twisted knee looked at. She left the service through a medical discharge in 1991, having achieved the rank of E-3. She married an officer in the Army, and they had four sons together. He deployed many times while they were married, and she is very outspoken about her experiences, good and bad, as a military spouse. She does see it as mostly a positive experience, as she's made friends all over the world and was able to be her independent self. She describes the difficulty both she and her now ex-husband faced whenever he'd return from deployments, as they were both used to functioning very independently, being in charge in their own spaces. Women who were all living together on the army base would work together to help each other out in their spouses' absence while deployed or on other bases around the country. Her advice to future military members and spouses is to forget the little issues, and to instead focus on the positives of exploring and learning about new people and places.
