Side 2 of 2. This is the edited interview audio. Florence M. Fattig (formerly Shotkoski) was born on August 4, 1919 in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. She joined the Army Nurse Corps January of 1941, and served stateside at Fort Lewis, Washington; Brigham, Utah; and Camp White, Oregon. After these three assignments, she joined the 104th Evacuation Hospital in August 1943, landed in England in March 1944, and crossed the channel to France in July 1944 with the 3rd Army. She recalls treating German patients and American casualties while in Nantes, France and how important penicillin was to treating patients. One day, there was an evacuation alert and they ended up evacuating in the wrong direction. At one point they were billeted in a hotel where the Luftwaffe had been earlier in the war. She was also able to visit her brother while he was in Salzberg. She met General Patton in North Africa, and also had dinner with the Duchess of Luxembourg. In February of 1945, she was awarded a Bronze Star that was pinned on by General Patton. When V-E Day came to pass, she had met criteria for discharge and was on her way back to the States on V-J Day, celebrating it in Piccadilly Square in London before crowding on a ship headed to South Carolina. From there, she went to Fort Sheridan, Illinois to separate from the Army in February 1946, reunite with her husband, and return to civilian nursing. When she left the service, Fattig had reached the rank of 1st lieutenant, and for her service she was awarded a Bronze Star Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with a silver star, and a World War II Victory Medal.
