description:
Sarah M. Ferguson was born on October 16, 1919 in Schenectady, New York. She went to a very small private school until she was sent to Chatham Hall for boarding school, which she graduated from before attending Vassar College. She graduated with a bachelors degree in 1941 and returned to Schenectady, teaching at a nursery school and becoming greatly involved in war work. Although the Army was open to women first, she wanted to wait for the Navy. By the time they opened up in 1943, however, she had committed to another year of teaching, joining the Navy WAVES in 1944. She applied for Officers Training, went to get a physical and took an achievement test in New York, then returned home to wait and hear if she’d been accepted. After Midshipman Training at Smith College in Massachusetts, she was assigned to the Fleet Administrative Office as part of the Atlantic Fleet at the Norfolk Navy Yard. There, she was a Communications Officer responsible for coding and encoding all incoming messages for the ships in the yard. In April 1946,she went to the Navy office in Washington, DC to be discharged and returned to Schenectady to start a career of volunteerism and community service. When she left the service, Ferguson had reached the rank of lieutenant junior grade, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
