description:
This is the edited interview audio. Anita C. Kuhn (formerly Jones) was born on February 7, 1921 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She went to school in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and went to secretarial school in Philadelphia after taking a six month break following graduation. She worked as a secretary in various places, one job being a two-year stint at the Institute of Mental and Nervous Diseases in Philadelphia. When World War II started she wanted to do something, and after looking at her options she decided to join the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve in November 1943. She went to boot camp at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and was assigned to work for the head of the Psychiatric Department at the Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune. She stayed on this assignment for a few months but was moved when the Navy created the Navy WAVES. She stayed at Camp Lejeune but was moved to a payroll clerk position. Although her Master Sergeant tried to upset her, he never really succeeded, and she greatly enjoyed the position. Her next assignment was in Washington, DC with the Records Department where she stayed for nine months. She did not enjoy her time in DC nearly as much as Camp Lejeune. She was stationed in Washington, DC when the war ended, so she was discharged from there in November 1945. Kuhn had reached the rank of sergeant upon her discharge, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. A transcript of this interview is available.
