subject:
Marine Corps Women's Reserve
description:
Kathleen Drummond was born on September 22, 1918 in Martinsville, Illinois. She was raised on a farm that had been in her family for six generations, and she graduated as valedictorian of her high school in 1935. She went to Indiana State University in Terra Haute, Indiana and graduated in 1939. She returned to Illinois and got a masters degree in education from the University of Illinois, then taught for three years in Charleston, Illinois. She joined the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve in June of 1943 and went to officer’s training, a member of the 7th class to do so. She was selected for the Post Exchange (PX), so she spent eight weeks in general training and another four weeks at PX School. She was then stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station in Mojave, California and managed the PX. She remained stationed there until her discharge in 1946 and became a teacher in Indiana. She then moved on to teaching secretarial school at the University of Louisville, Kentucky for 42 years. In a 25-year stretch, she was one of only seven women faculty members, and the only one in the business school. She used the GI Bill to get her PhD at Northwestern University and, as of the interview, lived in Louisville, Kentucky with her husband. When she was discharged, Drummond had reached the rank of captain, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
