description:
Marilynn E. Doenges (formerly Logsdon) was born on November 15, 1922 in East Canton, Ohio. After high school, she attended the Aultman Hospital School of Nursing in Ohio, and enrolled in the Red Cross in 1942 while there. After getting her license as a nurse in 1943, she enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps in 1944. She went to basic training at For Benjamin Harrison, Indiana and, after finishing training, was assigned to the 5th Service Command at Ashford General Hospital in West Virginia. They did every type of care there, and many of their patients were wounded in the Battle of the Bulge, some of whom arrived only six days after being on the front. From there, she was sent to Europe. They landed in Scotland and traveled to Bristol, England to work in the 94th General Hospital. She left England for France, stationed throughout the country with the 221st and 227th General Hospitals, including Le Havre, Normandy, Mourmelon Le Petit, and Marseilles. In France she continued to work in a variety of nursing settings, the most notable of which was working night shifts in the psychiatric ward where she was one of two supervisors for the entire hospital. She was discharged in 1946, and although her mother hadn’t been told of her arrival in advance, she had a feeling and had already made Doenges’ favorite meal. After the war, she used the GI Bill to get a bachelors degree in nursing at the University of Colorado, and twenty years later she went on to get a masters degree from the same school. Upon er discharge, Doenges had reached the rank of 1st lieutenant, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
