description:
Part 2 of 2. Stacey R. Young (formerly Crane) was born on March 8, 1972 in Riverdale, Georgia. She enlisted in the Navy in May 1999 and went to basic training in Great Lakes, Illinois. From there, she went to advanced training to become an aerographer’s mate at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi and received her first assignment in January 2000. Her first station was the USS George Washington CVN73, which was based out of Norfolk, Virginia. She went on two 6-month deployments with this ship between January 2000 and July 2003, first during Operation Southern Watch from June to December 2000, and second during Operation Enduring Freedom from June to December 2002. This ship was also sent to New York City on September 11, 2001 so their fighter jets could protect the city from any possible secondary attacks. While deployed during Operation Southern Watch, their rear escort back through the Suez Canal was USS Cole, which pulled into Yemen and was bombed right when her own ship was about to enter the Suez Canal. In July 2003, she received her next assignment to the Pentagon in July 2003, where she worked with the Naval Ice Center METOC Component in the Navy Operations Center. After a year there, she was assigned to the Naval Ice Center in Suitland, Maryland, which is where she was stationed as of her 2011 interview. As of the interview Young had reached the rank of Naval Counselor Petty Officer 1st class (AW/SW), and for her service she had been awarded a Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy “E” Ribbon with 2 “E” devices, Navy Good Conduct Medal with a star, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with a star. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
