description:
Side 2 of 2. Ardelle Courtney (formerly Knopf) was born on July 24, 1923 in Kenyan, Minnesota. She enlisted in the Navy WAVES in 1943, went to basic training at Hunter College in New York, and then reported to corps training in the Great Lakes. After that, she was stationed at the Brooklyn Naval Hospital in New York. While there for a year and a half, she worked on ambulance duty, in the cancer ward at Fort Green Housing Project, and in the dependent ward. She enjoyed the nightlife of being a young, single woman in New York City, attending plays, big band shows of artists like Tommy Dorsey, and hospital dances. From there, she went with a friend to the Aiea Naval Hospital near Pearl Harbor. While there, she served in the amputee ward and emergency admissions office. She remembers the most difficult day of her career was when the soldiers from the March of Bataan had a stop-over at the hospital. They were emaciated and traumatized, and the day was quite emotional and sad. Courtney also met her husband while stationed at Aiea Naval Hospital, and after they left the service in 1946, they were married by a pastor in her hometown of Big Stone City, South Dakota. When she left the service, Courtney had reached the rank of Pharmacist's Mate 3rd Class, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
