Navy Nurse Corps
description:
Juanita Gosch (formerly Mang) was born on November 21, 1922 in Charlotte, Texas. She graduated from Santa Rosa School of Nursing in 1943, and was recruited to the Navy Nurse Corps through the Red Cross upon her graduation. After going through indoctrination and physical exam at Corpus Christie, she was stationed in San Diego, California at the very start of January 1944. She was there for a year, mostly treating men returning from Guam, Iwo Jima, and Tarawa with serious wounds and injuries. In January 1945, she was stationed in Sampson, New York, where they had fewer severe combat injuries to treat since it wasn’t the main hospital for European front injuries to be shuttled to. Her last station was a Naval Air Field in Norfolk, Virginia, which was very similar to her time in New York. When she was discharged in June 1946, Gosch had reached the rank of lieutenant junior grade, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. Gosch passed away in November 2010. A transcript of this interview is available.
