description:
Page Parker (formerly Davis) was born on September 15,1921 in Natchez, Mississippi. She grew up there and, after graduating high school, attended the University of Kentucky and graduated in three years with a degree in business. She first considered joining the military after recruiters came to campus her senior year at college, which was in the midst of World War II. Many of her friends were joining the Navy WAVES and Women’s Army Corps, and every week a bulletin was posted containing the names of men from campus who had been killed in action, so she felt she should enlist to help as best she could. She enlisted in October 1943, choosing the WAVES because she liked the uniforms the best. She went to basic training at Hunter College in New York, where she was trained by other WAVES. After training, she was stationed at the Office of Naval Officer Procurement in New Orleans, Louisiana. There, she worked as a recruiter for two years, interviewing applicants; giving aptitude tests; and giving public talks at civic clubs, movie theaters, college campuses, and on radio shows. Her work spanned across Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Arkansas. In 1945, she was sent to Officer’s Training School and Supply Corps School in Washington, DC, then was assigned to the Navy Gun Factory in DC as a commissioned officer. There her job was as assistant to the Outgoing Stores Officer, taking charge of confidential files showing the locations of Navy ships and the code designations of advance bases. She remained at this station until her discharge in August 1946 with the rank of lieutenant junior grade, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
