description:
Audrey D. Keagy (formerly Ohler) was born on August 17, 1913 in Wattsville, Ohio as the middle of five children. Her father worked on a railroad so her family moved often, and she graduated high school in Bergholz, Ohio in 1941, working in an office for some time before moving to Canton, Ohio and working on the factory floor of an airplane manufacturer bringing parts to assemblers. She wanted to enlist in the Coast Guard but couldn’t get parental permission to enlist before turning 21, so she had to wait until 1944 to join. After basic training at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, she worked as a switchboard operator in Toledo and Cleveland, Ohio and Detroit, Michigan. She was discharged in 1946 and heard about the GI Bill in the newspaper soon after. She used it to enroll at Kent State University, studying to become a kindergarten teacher because she liked small children. She first taught for a few years in Canton, Ohio before moving to Williamsburg, Ohio. She taught grades kindergarten through fifth grade in her 26-year career there, and in that time, she also got married to another veteran and had one child. They retired to Florida, where she has worked for years as a volunteer teacher for immigrants learning English. When she left the service Keag had reached the rank of Specialist 2nd Class, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
